Nature is always close in Esbjerg. The Wadden Sea and the North Sea and the forestland and plantations offer you spectacular nature experiences. Some of the best beaches in the country are never further away than a few kilometres, and the cities are full of green spaces, parks, and recreational areas.

You can explore the wildlife of the forests, creeks, or lakes, go seal-watching, feed a deer, or watch the natural phenomenon “Black Sun,” when impressive flocks of starlings gather before migrating, as they create beautiful formations in the sky.

Wildlife at the Wadden Sea

In the air, or at sea, the Wadden Sea area is full of wildlife that is unique.

You can hardly find a place with as many migrating birds as here. Between ten and twelve million waterfowls travel through the Wadden Sea area every year on their way from or to their breeding grounds. The Wadden Sea has Denmark’s largest population of harbour seals, and the shallow waters are breeding grounds for many of our most important fish species.

When the tide pulls away, it opens up a true cornucopia of food for the Wadden Sea’s birds. You can study the abundant birdlife, and if you are lucky, you may even see seals very close. The seabed also reveals the hidden treasures of the ocean; oysters on the banks, or amber – the gold of the sea.
